Ashes are placed in a sealed container and mailed along with a death certificate and other paperwork to an ash scattering company. The ashes are then placed on board the company’s private airplane. Once the plane is airborne and has arrived at a certain elevation or at a certain destination, the ashes are released into the air, usually through a hatch. The release may occur over land or water.

People observing on the ground will often see a white cloud of ash stream behind the plane during the release.
